Ayushmann Khurrana Addresses The Dark Skin Bala Controversy Around Bhumi Pednekar’s Character- EXCLUSIVE

Bhumi Pednekar’s dark-skinned role in Bala led to a huge debate on the Internet as netizens slammed makers for not casting someone with the original dark skin tone and instead choosing an actress with slightly lighter skin colour. We spoke to Ayushmann Khurrana and here’s what he had to say

Bala that stars Ayushmann Khurrana, Yami Gautam and Bhumi Pednekar in main roles has been in the eye of the storm. The film has been making headlines for various reasons. One amongst them happens to be Bhumi Pednekar’s dark-skinned role in the movie.

Talking about the Bhumi's role controversy, you may recall, as the trailer dropped online, netizens bombarded social media, asking makers why they cast a fair-skinned actress to play a dark-skinned character.

So, when we got an opportunity to speak to the cast of the film,-Ayushmann and Yami, among an array of pertaining questions posed by us, one of them was on the very controversy revolving around Bhumi. 



Ayushmann defended his Dum Laga Ke Haisha co-star and Bala makers by putting forward a logical explanation. He replied, "Then actors should not play cricketers, cricketers should not be actors or Kamal Haasan sir shouldn't have played Appu Raja. Why not cast a real dwarf for the role? We are actors and are open to doing roles which are challenging- where we can push boundaries. The priority to be cast in a film should be your talent and people should look forward to your work."

In the same vein, Ayushmann spoke about Taapsee Pannu-Bhumi Pednekar's Saand Ki Aankh, which was a  victim to same thinking, The actor said that 'no one raised a question on their roles after watching the film.' 

“Bhumi is a credible actor. She is bringing something great to the table. She has done a tremendous job in Bala and the message in the end just underlines the fact that beauty is not just skin deep, it's positive,” said Ayushmann. Yami too added, "When you watch the film, I don't think this aspect will be around the periphery of your thought process. It will only strike you if you want to look for it. Bhumi has done a fantastic job; she is a brilliant actor. And that just shows what a versatile artiste she is and the level of faith directors have in her.
